How to import Google Docs to WordPress
Turn a Google Doc into a WordPress post or page: paste the link, preview, publish. About two minutes, with images uploaded to your WordPress Media Library and no downloading or re-uploading. One setting decides whether it works, so that comes first.
The document has to be shared as “Anyone with the link”.
The plugin fetches the document the way a browser with the link would. If it is restricted to named people, Google refuses, and it refuses in the same way it refuses a mistyped link. Viewer access is enough, and you can restrict it again once the post is published.
The four steps
1. Share the document
In Google Docs, click Share at the top right. Under General access, change Restricted to Anyone with the link. Leave the role as Viewer.
2. Copy the link
Copy the address from your browser while the document is open, or click Copy link in the Share dialog. Both work; so does a link with /edit, /view or ?usp=sharing on the end.
3. Paste it into DocxToWP Pro in WordPress
In WordPress, open DocxToWP Pro → Upload Document and choose the From Google Docs tab. Paste the link. The field checks it as soon as you leave it: a green tick means it is a Google Docs link, and anything else, a Sheet, a Slides deck, a Drive file or a typo, is named right there. Then click Convert & Preview.
Tick Preserve the page layout first if the document is a newsletter or brochure built from text boxes. You can also switch on the next screen.
4. Preview and publish to WordPress
The preview shows the post as it will be: headings, lists, tables, links and images. Set the post type, category, tags, author and status, then publish or save it as a draft.
Editing the Google Doc after publishing to WordPress
Keep writing in Google Docs. When you import the same document again, the preview screen shows the post it created last time, with Update that post already ticked. The post keeps its address, so links to it keep working.
If your organisation blocks Google Docs link sharing
Some Google Workspace administrators disable “Anyone with the link”, and then the plugin cannot fetch the document at all. Use File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx) in Google Docs and upload the file on the Upload a file tab. It goes through the same importer and gives the same result.
Google Docs to WordPress: common questions
It says Google would not hand the document over.
Either the link is wrong or the document is not shared, and Google answers both the same way, so the plugin cannot tell which. Open the document, click Share, set General access to "Anyone with the link", and paste the link again. If it is already shared, copy the link fresh from the address bar.
Does the document have to be public?
It has to be viewable by anyone who has the link, which is not the same as public: it is not listed or searchable anywhere, and nobody finds it without the link. Viewer access is all the plugin needs. Once the post is published you can switch sharing back to Restricted; the post does not depend on the document afterwards.
My organisation does not allow link sharing.
Some Google Workspace administrators turn it off, and then this cannot work. In Google Docs choose File, Download, Microsoft Word (.docx), and upload that file on the Upload a file tab instead. It imports exactly the same way.
What happens if I import the same document again?
The plugin remembers which Google Doc each post came from. Importing it again shows the post it created last time, with the option to update that post already ticked, so editing in Google Docs and re-importing keeps one post rather than making a new one each time.
Do images from the Google Doc come across to WordPress?
Yes. Every image in the document is uploaded to your Media Library and placed in the post, as with a .docx upload. Images that are already in your library, from an earlier import, are not uploaded twice.
Can I import a Google Sheet or Slides deck?
No. This imports Google Docs documents. The plugin recognises a Sheets or Slides link as soon as you paste it and says so, rather than trying and failing.
Can I import Google Docs to WordPress with the free plugin?
Not yet. Importing from a Google Docs link is in DocxToWP Pro. In the free plugin, download the document as .docx from Google Docs and upload it, which gives the same result one step slower.
Still not importing?
Send me the link and the message you saw. The system report from DocxToWP Pro → Help & Support helps too.
